To Our Clients:
This letter is to notify you of a very important change in the prescription drug marketplace that will affect both your members and your plan costs.
A generic alternative for Prilosec® (omeprazole), a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) for stomach acid disorders, will soon be available. Prilosec is one of the most commonly-prescribed drugs in many drug programs, and a generic alternative should help reduce your plan costs in the long run.
Unlike most generic product launches, the pharmacy industry anticipates shortages in the initial supply of this widely-prescribed product, and some pharmacies may face challenges keeping the drug in stock. Most large retail chains, such as Walgreens or Albertson’s, may be able to help members find a pharmacy where omeprazole is in stock.
In the case of an industry-wide shortage, members will be able to obtain Prilosec at their brand copays. For clients with three-tier plan designs, Prilosec® will remain a Preferred (second-tier) drug until supplies of omeprazole stabilize.
As you know, mail service prescriptions are typically processed in ninety-day supplies. To ensure an adequate short-term supply for the largest number of patients, WHI will temporarily exempt omeprazole from its prescriber contact programs at mail.
This situation remains fluid, and WHI will provide you with updates as this issue unfolds. We remain committed to generic substitution as the best strategy for plan savings, and will work with you to affect these savings in the long term.
Sincerely,
Walgreens Health Initiatives
