Announcement

Attached please find an important notification from Walgreens regarding the recent availability of Prilosec in generic form.

As a summary, the generic form of Prilosec was released last week.  The contract to produce the generic form of Prilosec was awarded to a relatively small prescription manufacturer, and therefore the industry is expecting and planning for a shortage of the generic pills.

To ensure that employees are not inconvenienced, Walgreens is keeping the brand drug in the second tier (for Employers like NACOG who have a three tier program) because they do not want patients penalized by having to pay the third tier copayment if the generic form is not available.

Additionally, when generics are introduced into the market, Walgreens traditionally works behind the scenes by calling physicians and requesting that the patient be prescribed the generic drug.  Because of the possibility of shortage, Walgreens will not be calling doctors until it is known that enough of this drug will be available.
